Anxiety, depression and the power of ‘Now’

The power of ‘Now’ – of being in the present moment – is a great concept – it does help everybody to be present – and that’s the conversation trend today. But if you break it down for different HealthTypes, we see that it’s not the best practice for everyone at all times.

Ectomorphic bodies, our Crusaders and Sensors, are all about the future – when they are in flow, they naturally think of the future and focus on future things rather than those in the present or past. Our Crusader who is anxious and worried about the future is not in a balanced, healthy state. In fact, it could be seen as dysfunctional. An effective therapeutic intervention for this person may very well be to come back to the present, getting away from the anxiety of the future: the power of ‘Now’.

Is living in the moment helpful for Crusaders? From a therapeutic point of view it can certainly be helpful.

Is it helpful for them to live in the present moment in day-to-day life for the long term? Absolutely not – because it’s not their natural state.

Endomorphs, our Guardians and Diplomats, are all about the past. When they are in flow they naturally think more about the past rather than the present or future. Our Diplomat who is depressed – who is dwelling on the past in a dysfunctional way – do we want to bring them back to the present moment as a therapeutic intervention? Yes. The power of ‘Now’ is a very powerful tool in this case. Long term in-the-moment living as a Diplomat? Not a healthy option because it is so different to their natural way of processing.

Mesomorphs, our Activators and Connectors, are all about the present moment and when they are in flow, they are naturally in the NOW. These bodies can be where we see a higher incidence of both anxiety and depression as too much worry about the future (anxiety) or too much worry about the past (depression) can both create imbalance in this body. Our Activator caught up in what ‘might be’ or what ‘could have been’ is totally out of flow. Could we use the power of ‘Now’ as a therapeutic intervention? Yes, for sure. As a day-to-day way of living? Absolutely, Yes!

The therapeutic value of living in the moment is undeniable when used as an intervention but as a gold-standard long-term approach to health, well being and flow for everyone? Unfortunately, like all generic approaches, it depends – it could be perfect for some people and detrimental for others.
